Tresa Halbrooks |
When Tresa Halbrooks '94 moved to Nashville, Tenn., after graduation, she envisioned a career on stage singing country music, but now, a decade later, her "stage" is a freshly painted field of grass with an NFL logo.
The Ruidoso native was recently named one of Tennessee's Top 40 Under 40 Young Leaders for her years of philanthropic efforts throughout Nashville.
Since 2001, Halbrooks, community and player relations manager for the Tennessee Titans NFL team, has served as the team's community and nonprofit liaison. She manages player community appearances and involvement in special events as well as the Tennessee Titans Women's Association, a far stretch from the country music industry that originally brought her to Nashville.
The NMSU journalism and mass communications graduate previously worked for Gaylord Entertainment Co. and Service Merchandise Corporate Headquarters where she was involved in similar community and charitable campaigns.
In addition to her responsibilities with the Titans, Halbrooks plays a major role in many of Nashville's most prestigious community efforts and events, including helping to prevent domestic violence. She is proud of her efforts to raise money and public awareness regarding that issue.
She's also involved with projects that benefit Second Harvest Food Bank, Toys for Tots, Nurses for Newborns and an annual Christmas party for foster children. She has served on the boards of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Watkins College of Art, the Nashville Film Festival and the Nashville Sports Council.
"It's extremely rewarding and it's definitely a paycheck of the heart," Halbrooks says of her volunteer work.
Although her NFL career and volunteer work leave little time for singing, she occasionally performs at Titans functions and at her church.
"In the end, I'm doing exactly what I was meant to do," she says. "The Lord had something different in mind for me other than music. I don't know what He has planned for me 10 years from now, but I'm sure it will be an exciting road to travel."
