| Aggie Family Loses Long-time Supporters |
By Ann Palormo |
Long-time Aggie boosters have noticed empty seats at athletic events during the 2005 season with the passing of four of the university's most loyal fans.
Carl Faubion '50, farmed in the Mesilla Valley for 50 years. He also served on many agriculture and education related boards, commissions and committees. He was a member of the NMSU Board of Regents for 12 years. They honored him for his service by naming him the first President Emeritus of the Board of Regents.
Faubion also was honored many times for his service to the agriculture industry and named distinguished alumnus from the College of Agriculture and Home Economics in 2000. He passed away in October 2005. The Carl and Joan Faubion endowed fund has been established in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics in his memory.
"Mr. Aggie" Clay Fiske passed away in September 2005 at the age of 94. He attended NMSU between 1932 and 1936, lettering in three collegiate sports - football, basketball and baseball - which earned him a place in the Citizens Bank/NMSU Athletics Hall of Fame. Fiske earned several other honors from the university including the Branding Iron award from the NMSU Foundation in 1976.
Fiske was the owner of Southwestern Independent Contractors in El Paso, Texas. He and his wife May established the Fiske Family Scholarship in civil engineering.
Blanche Hubbard '32 enjoyed all athletics and attended as many games as she possibly could. She met her husband while a student at NMSU and they returned to Las Cruces following his retirement. Hubbard was very active with the NMSU Alumni Association, which honored her with the James Cole Award for Service. Her family asked that gifts be made in her memory to the women's volleyball program.
Betsy Meerscheidt's husband Stuart played basketball for the Aggies in the 1950s, which could have been the catalyst for her loyalty to the university's athletic program. She passed away in August 2004. Gifts in her memory will support athletics.
