Engineering scholarships are supported by the endowment named for Allene B. Mann and Thomas T. Mann. |
In 1990 Allene Goldman, a marriage, child and family therapist in Dallas, decided to create a scholarship in honor of her father, Thomas T. Mann, who had earned his civil engineering degree from New Mexico State University. She and her siblings, Louhannah Walker, Juanita Larsen and Thomas T. Mann Jr., made annual gifts to support this award.
Last spring, Goldman sent out a letter to family and friends, inviting them to help make the fund a permanent endowment honoring both of her parents, Thomas T. "Big Daddy" and Allene B. Mann. The fund has exceeded the $10,000 endowment level.
"I always hoped we would be able to endow this fund," Goldman says. "It will be a lasting memory to my father, who believed his degree from NMSU contributed to his success."
After graduating in 1929, Thomas Mann went to work with the New Mexico Highway Department, which required 17 moves over a two-year period. In 1938 the family settled in Roswell and lived there for more than 60 years. Mann served as assistant city engineer for Roswell for a few years before opening his own engineering and surveying firm, Mann Engineering, which he owned for 40 years. He passed away in 1990.
Allene Mann (known to the family as Mammy) raised four children. She enjoys gardening and playing bridge and now resides in Santa Fe.
As in the past, the Thomas T. Mann Sr. and Allene B. Mann scholarship will support students from either civil engineering or surveying. Students must have a 3.2 GPA and be classified as sophomores or higher to be eligible.
