1960s

Billy D. Borden ’67 ’73 of Rosebud, Texas, has written the book “Al,” which illustrates life and love, and how good and caring people can be. A Vietnam-era Army veteran, Borden worked for the state of Texas as a wildlife biologist for 10 years and recently retired from an 18-year tenure as a science teacher in Rosebud, where be currently owns and operates a small business.

1970s

Herb Hall ’72 of Van Nuys, Calif., was recognized for 20 years of teaching at Beverly Hills High School.

Stanley D. Smith ’73 ’75 of Las Vegas, Nev., recently received the Barrick Distinguished Scholar Award, UNLV’s highest scholar award. In 2003 he received Nevada’s most prestigious research award, the Harry Reid Silver State Research Award. He is currently a professor of life sciences at UNLV.

Kathy Kitchens ’76 of Las Cruces joined First National Bank as a trust and investments officer. Kitchens is a member of the Southern New Mexico Estate Planning Council and has 18 years of experience in banking.

Col. Michael R. Gonzales ’77 of Santa Fe, N.M., recently joined the Board of Directors of the Army Scholarship Foundation. Gonzales served more than 23 years on active duty with the New Mexico National Guard and the United States Army.

Martha S. Bryant ’78 of North Bay Village, Fla., recently completed her Ph.D. in free-choice learning in cultural institutions. Bryant also has joined the New World Symphony, America’s orchestral academy, as senior director of development.

Jaime Sierra ’79 of Austin, Texas, was recently named president of TxOGA Insurance Agency Inc. in Austin, Texas. Sierra also is vice president of finance for the Texas Oil & Gas Association and is a certified public accountant and licensed insurance agent. He previously was employed with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts as chief accountant.

1980s

Jon A. Wheeler ’80 of Beavercreek, Ohio, was elected president of the Board of Directors for the Dayton Society of Professional Engineers. Wheeler joined the technical and management consulting firm of Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. in 1994 after serving in the U.S. Air Force for 14 years as an officer in civil engineering.

Thurman K. Case ’80 ’82 of Austin, Texas, has been promoted to vice president of finance, corporate controller and treasurer, and has been acting chief financial officer for Cirrus Logic Inc. since 2005. Case has more then 23 years of finance experience.

Ernesto Hurtado ’82 of Holman, N.M., is the new Las Vegas district forester, serving as one of six district foresters for the Forestry Division of the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department. Hurtado has more than 26 years of management of natural resources experience.

Sandy Davenport ’83 of Las Cruces has joined the Rocket Racing League as their communications manager. Previously, Davenport had been the executive director of the United Way for eight years.

Andrew Baca ’84 of Albuquerque, N.M., was recently named the 2006 Minority Male Entrepreneur of the Year by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Baca is president and CEO of Albuquerque-based Abba Technologies Inc., a minority-owned technology corporation.

Edward Dennis Flores ’87 of Las Cruces was named to the “Toppers Club” of Farmers Insurance Group. The “Toppers Club” recognizes the top 13 percent of its agency force. Flores has been named to the club seven times during the 17 years he has been with the company.

David R. Leffler ’87 of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., a director at the Center for Advanced Military Science, was interviewed on the Seattle radio program, “Enlighten Your Life” in October 2006. Host Paul Stokstad questioned Leffler on how Invincible Defense Technology (IDT) could be used to quickly end the war in Iraq. Leffler received his Ph.D. in consciousness-based military defense from The Union Institute & University in 1997.

Renee B. Matthews ’87 of Burlington, Ky., received the status of Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). Matthews completed her master’s degree at Hampton University and a Dietetic Internship program with the Veteran’s Administration in Tampa, Fla. She has been a registered dietitian for more than 10 years and currently provides outpatient counseling for the Cincinnati Veterans Medical Center.

Cristina Allen ’88 of Nashville, Texas, is the president and owner of Caliente Consulting, a company that specializes in Hispanic and Multicultural Marketing. Allen is a specialist in multicultural marketing, entertainment marketing, event logistics, concert tours, corporate and private sporting/special events, and sales and retail promotions.

Arthur A. Johnson ’89 of Las Cruces has been appointed vice president of sales with Next Phase Enterprises in Phoenix, Ariz. Johnson has worked with StockPot Inc., United Signature Foods LLC, Chef America Inc. and Nestlé USA.

Floyd McAlister ’89 of Portales, N.M., has served 21 years as an extension agent in Roosevelt County. McAlister has put together several programs such as Peanut Field Day and the New Mexico Agriculture Expo.

1990s

Ted A. Lovato ’90 of Santa Fe, N.M., has been employed by the state of New Mexico for the past 15 years. He most recently held the position as the northern regional administrator with Juvenile Probation and Parole. Previously, Lovato held a variety of positions, including the chief of the First Judicial District and a juvenile facility administrator with the Corrections Corporation of America at the Santa Fe Juvenile Detention Center.

Monica Aissa Martinez ’91 of Phoenix, Ariz., will exhibit her work during February 2007 at the Eye Lounge, 419 East Roosevelt St., Phoenix, Ariz. Angela Armstrong ’93 of Rio Rancho, N.M., has been promoted to director of sales of GES Exposition Services Inc. Armstrong is responsible for Denver, Phoenix, Reno and Salt Lake City. She is a member of the International Association for Exhibition Management, Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International, and Meetings Professionals International.

Don E. Graham ’94 of Santa Fe, N.M., has accepted a position as a network specialist II for the state of New Mexico, Human Services Department.

Eleazar Hernandez ’95 ’98 of San Antonio, Texas, has been promoted to associate creative director for Creative Civilization, an advertising agency. Hernandez has worked all over the country with a wide range of clients from government, architectural and business-to-business, to healthcare, fashion, retail and packaged goods industries.

Jason Anderson ’96 of Albuquerque, N.M., has been named vice president and southwest division sales development manager for Bank of the West. Anderson has more than 10 years of banking experience including positions with Bank of America and Bank of Oklahoma in Tulsa, where he was vice president and district manager. He is a member of the New Mexico State University Alumni Association International Board of Directors and a classroom consultant for Junior Achievement.

2000s

Jeremy Gwin ’00 of Albuquerque, N.M., a civil engineer with Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas Inc., has received his Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

Gerald O’Donnell ’00 of Las Cruces has been promoted to tax supervisor by REDW – The Rogoff Firm.

Kari Ennis ’01 of Lake Arthur, N.M., joined the Peace Corps and is located in Panama, where she is involved in conservation education. Ennis will return to the U.S. in July 2007 and will complete her master’s degree at Washington State University.

Kelly J. Fisk ’02 ’04 of El Paso, Texas, was selected as the 2005-2006 El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) Campus Teacher of the Year for EPISD’s Occupational Center. Fisk teaches horticulture at the center.

James C. Fisk ’03 of El Paso, Texas, has been promoted to senior planner with the city of El Paso’s Planning Department.

Nathan D. Muñoz ’03 of El Paso, Texas, has completed 12 weeks of basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif.

Alena Sharp ’03 of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, earned her card in December at the LPGA Tour Qualifying Tournament. Last year, Sharp played on the Futures Tour, collecting three top 10 finishes.

Erin McSherry ’04 of Albuquerque, N.M., will be spending at least six months in Ecuador volunteering with Habitat for Humanity International. McSherry has set up a blog to share her experiences, www.erinmcsherry.blogspot.com/.

Christopher Scott ’05 of Carrizozo, N.M., was named Rookies Agriculture Instructor of the Year. Scott begins work as the new agriculture instructor in Carrizozo this year.
