The chance to learn more about the largest of New Mexicos 19 pueblos is coming up in a special series of workshops at the New Mexico State University Grants campus.
ZuniZest is the third in a series of cultural immersions to create understanding and appreciation for the states pueblos and their cultural differences and similarities.
When we know one another and begin to understand one anothers traditions and beliefs, we no longer fear or dislike the unknown, says Sandee Kosmo, community education coordinator for NMSU Grants. We open ourselves up to loving one another. When that happens, we become true neighbors and care for one another.
Kosmo says the idea is to have an in-depth, several-session course offered primarily by the people being studied, with some or most of it on their turf. The first program, Laguna Live, included a field trip to the pueblo. The second, Acoma Unbounded, was held completely at the Acoma pueblo.
ZuniZest will be mostly off campus, Kosmo says. Since Zuni is not on a freeway and is about an hour and a half southwest of Grants, logistics will be key.
Organizers also plan to teach participants about several areas of Zuni history, including migration, art and visits to the pueblos Arts and Visitors Center in Zuni to see stone carving, silversmithing, pottery and discuss authenticity issues.
All ages are encouraged to take part in ZuniZest.
We all work together for the common mission of education and bringing peoples closer together to appreciate the many rich heritages here, Kosmo says.
The sessions should begin in mid-March and run through April, excluding the first week of April.
