Kurt S.J. Anderson, professor of astronomy at New Mexico State University, has been elected president of the New Mexico Academy of Science.

Anderson's one-year term of office begins with the academy's annual meeting in Albuquerque on Nov. 14, at which he will be the post-banquet speaker. The central theme of the meeting is "Water in New Mexico" and the topic of Anderson's speech will be "Water in the Rest of the Universe."

Anderson is site director for the Apache Point Observatory near Sunspot, N.M. His principal scientific interests concern the structures of galaxies and nuclear activity within galaxies.
