Created by The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy organization of Boston, the exhibit is a smaller version of a large multi-media exhibit that was first shown at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y. The large exhibit, being shown in September and October at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, has been traveling throughout the United States since 1998.
Mary Baker Eddy lived 1821-1910. She was part of the women’s reform movement challenging mainstream thinking in regards to health-care and religion, and proved through her life that a woman could be a thinker and an entrepreneur. She is best known for founding The Christian Science Monitor and as the author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
The exhibit portrays Eddy as a healer, thinker and reformer. Her unexpected recovery from an accident provided the impetus for her pioneering work in mind-body healing. As a thinker, along with certain other women of her generation such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, she questioned the subordinate role of women in American society. As a reformer, she lectured, published, and founded a church, a college and a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper.
