New Mexico State library awarded funds to acquire poet Keith Wilson’s papers

The Rio Grande Historical Collections (RGHC) of the New Mexico State University Library has been awarded $5,200 by the university’s Southwest and Border Cultures Institute to acquire a portion of the manuscripts and correspondence of New Mexico poet Keith Wilson.

Wilson’s personal papers consist primarily of correspondence with other poets and critics and manuscripts of his writing. His correspondence spans more than four decades and frequent correspondents include writers Theodore Enslin, William Stafford, Rudolfo Anaya and Charles Bell. There are also manuscripts of his published works including “Lion’s Gate,” “Grave’s Registry,” “The Priesthood Quartet” and manuscripts of unpublished works.

Archivist and project director Portia Vescio of the RGHC said the papers will supplement the library’s collection of printed volumes by Keith Wilson. “It will make the papers of a significant New Mexico literary figure available for research purposes,” she said.

Grant awards from the Southwest and Border Cultures Institute, which is a joint project of the university’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University Museum and the library, are made possible by a challenge grant from the National Endowment for Humanities. This is the second year awards have been made by the institute.
