Wilson Blount was among the United States’ first black military airmen who entered World War II. More than 900 men were trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Ala., and served the United States from 1942 to 1946. In 1948, President Harry Truman enacted an executive order to provide equal treatment and opportunity in the Army, which led to the end of racial segregation in the military.

Josephine De Leon, associate provost for academic affairs, will be honored with the 2004 Racial Harmony Award. De Leon received her doctorate in bilingual and special education from NMSU in 1985. She also served as department head of the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders.

Tammy Jenkins, NMSU alumna, and the University Gospel Choir will perform at the breakfast.

Tickets for the breakfast are $15 and must be purchased by Tuesday, Jan. 13, in Garcia Annex Room 135. Proceeds for the event will be used to support scholarships, emergency loans and outreach activities for NMSU students.
