A symposium titled "Breast and Cervical Health in Women" is scheduled for 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in Hardman Hall Room 106. It will include two seminars, "Hormonal Issues and Breast Health in Women" by Rena Vassilopoulou-Sellin and "Cervical Health in College-Age Women" by Gloria Coronado. Vassilopoulou-Sellin is a professor of medicine and an endocrinologist at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Coronado works at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Cancer-Fest and Breastival-NMSU will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, on the International Mall between Hardman Hall and the Health and Social Services Building on the NMSU campus. Las Cruces Mayor William Mattiace will attend the Cancer-Fest opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and has requested the City Council declare Oct 8. Cancer Awareness Day.
Cancer-Fest will celebrate and share local contributions to advances in cancer research, prevention, detection and treatment. The event addresses health care disparities in a casual outdoor forum. There will be a student poster competition on types of cancer, booths by local and national organizations, free clinical breast exams, testicular exams and skin screenings.
At Breastival-NMSU, participants will receive a passport and can get stamps on their passports by answering a question about breast cancer or breast health at each booth. When participants have received all stamps, they can enter a raffle to win donated prizes. The first 125 students who enter the raffle will receive a box lunch. Breastival originated at Johns Hopkins University to promote breast health in college-age women and men in a festival-like atmosphere.
All three events at NMSU are free and open to the public. For more information contact Pamela N. Schultz, NMSU associate nursing professor, at (505) 646-2208 or pschultz@nmsu.edu.
