Author Virginia Valian to give talk

Virginia Valian, professor of psychology and linguistics at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will give a public talk titled "Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women" at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, in the Banquet Room of the New Mexico State University Golf Course Clubhouse, located off Geothermal Drive.

Valian's book by the same title examines why so few women are at the top of their profession in areas such as science, law, medicine, college teaching, industry and business. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Nature, Scientific American, The Women's Review of Books, and leading journals in cognitive and developmental psychology.

The talk will be preceded by a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. in the foyer of the clubhouse. The events are free and open to the public.
