Culbertson, who earned a master’s degree in history and a Ph.D. in education at NMSU, was an avid supporter of many university programs. As a donor, a volunteer and an advocate, she contributed to the natatorium, the library, the history and music departments, student scholarships and KRWG-FM, the public radio station on campus. To many KRWG-FM listeners and volunteers, she became known as “the food general” for organizing food donations during the station’s fundraising drives.
NMSU President Michael Martin has proclaimed Jan. 7 to be Jeanne Culbertson Day on campus in recognition of her many contributions to university life.
Culbertson, who died Nov. 30, 2005, at the age of 81, was active physically and intellectually throughout her life. She was involved in the Senior Olympics and traveled extensively. For the past 15 years she wrote a weekly column on senior living for the Las Cruces Sun-News.
