NMSU Theatre Arts and ASTC present William Shakespeare’s ‘The Taming of the Shrew’

Taming ShrewNew Mexico State University’s Department of Theatre Arts and the American Southwest Theatre Company will present William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” April 25 through May 4 at the Hershel Zohn Theatre on the NMSU campus. This is the final production of the 2007-2008 NMSU Theatre/ASTC Season.

“The Taming of the Shrew,” a controversial comedy, tells the story of Minola sisters Katherine and Bianca through their courtships and weddings.

“It is a play that explores relationships, how we relate to one another and to the world around us,” said Laura Grace Godwin, the production’s director and an NMSU faculty member. “Our production is all about perception and how the choice to conform and resist affects interaction with others.”

Godwin leads an experienced production staff of NMSU faculty including Scenic and Lighting Designer Jim Billings, Costume Designer Ginger Stull, Stage Manager Mike Wise and Props Designer and Technical Director David Hereford.

posterGodwin said the cast is comprised of a highly diverse group of talents eager to bring Shakespeare to Las Cruces. Guest artist Carla Noack, a professional actress based in Minnesota, will play Katherine. Timothy Dayne, who as appeared in several ASTC productions, will play Petruchio. Other community actors include Herb Smith, Robin Dorfman and Richard Rundell.

NMSU student cast members include Matt Jones, M. Joseph Lopez, Sarah Vannest, Mandy Guitar, Ben Adams, Tiesha Francis, Christopher Rivas, Amy Archibeque, Jennifer Perry, Jeff Tydlaska and Daniel Aguilar.

“Shakespeare is the foundation of the American theatrical tradition,” Godwin said. “We hope everyone will come join us for a funny and poignant production.”

A student matinee also will be held. Call the ASTC Box Office for details.

Ticket prices vary from $10-$15. Call the ASTC Box Office at (575) 646-4515 or 1-800-646-ASTC for details.
