The New Mexico State University rodeo team overpowered the competition during the first rodeo of the semester, the Cochise College National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) Rodeo held in Fort Huachuca, Ariz., Feb. 23-24.
“We had an extremely successful rodeo! Both the men’s and women’s teams dominated in their events and took commanding leads to end up winning this weekend. I am very proud of our rodeo athletes and expect these kinds of results the rest of the semester,” said Jim Dewey Brown, NMSU rodeo coach.
The women’s team finished with 695 points for the weekend, giving them a lead of more than 500 points over the second place team.
In the breakaway roping, Staci Stanbrough, of Capitan, N.M., won first, followed by teammate Brittany Striegel, of Aztec, N.M.
Bailey Gow, of Roseburg, Ore., placed second in the barrel racing event. Laura Baeza, of El Paso, Texas, finished third.
Bremerton, Wash., native Megan Corey won first in goat tying.
For the men’s team, Dean Daly, of Belen, N.M., and Olan Borg, of Camp Verde, Ariz., placed first and second, respectively, in the saddle bronc riding event.
In the tie-down roping, Casey Felton, of Fallon, Nev., placed second, while Tyson Runyan, of Silver City, N.M., placed third.
Wyatt Althoff, of Gilbert, Ariz., won the steer wrestling event.
The team of Althoff and Aaron Moyers, of Moriarty, N.M., won first in the team roping, while Miranda Jaramillo and Philip Carrillo, of Aztec, N.M., placed second.
Stanbrough was named the women’s all-around champion for the weekend, and Althoff was named the men’s all-around.
The next NIRA rodeo will be held at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., March 1-2.
