Although the state is trying to recruit more big business to New Mexico, fostering small businesses is just as important, says Anthony Popp, a professor of economics and international business at New Mexico State University. ::: 11.7 sx Soundbite “I think the real future in New Mexico is the fact that we grow our own businesses and foster those small businesses, and have people who want to be in New Mexico start them and stay here.” Popp says approximately 85 percent of the businesses in New Mexico employ fewer than 20 people. That includes both mom and pop type of companies and businesses that are just starting out. In recognition of the small-business community's contribution to the American economy and society, the president designates one week each year as National Small Business-Week. This year, National Small Business Week is the last week in April. |
