Convocation Jan. 11 was an opportunity to continue our tradition of giving the campus community an update on the state of the university. It is a fitting time for an update, as we honor our top faculty and the work they are doing to advance the university, creating and inspiring excellence in all that we do at New Mexico State University.

Also, it is important to note the achievements we have seen over the past year – for example, our new master’s and Ph.D. programs in aerospace; the designation of NMSU as the FAA’s lead institution for a Center of Excellence for Commercial Space Transportation; a $2.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health that will prepare undergraduates for careers in neuroscience; the tripling of our pecan research acreage after receiving 1,000 additional trees, thanks to Linwood Nursery in California; the opening of a new American Indian Student Center that will serve our more than 600 American Indian students in Las Cruces; the success of the student engineers’ concrete canoe in regional and national competitions; the celebration of 46 researchers who generated funding of $1 million or more during the 2008-2009 fiscal year and news that NMSU’s research awards have topped $198 million in 2009-2010; and the two emeritus NMSU professors who were invited to lecture at the Library of Congress on their groundbreaking book, “The Secret War in El Paso.” read more...
