The beginning of the 2011 session of the New Mexico Legislature is an appropriate time to focus on the importance of education in our state. In particular, it is a time to reemphasize the importance of higher education and the impact it has on the lives of our students, as well as the statewide work being done by New Mexico State University to improve the lives of New Mexicans through the development of research-based knowledge and outreach activities.

The NMSU Office of Government Relations and I have started meeting with legislators to be sure they are fully informed of the work being done by NMSU faculty and staff across the state. On Jan. 24 I sent a message to campus giving a first report on those activities.” read more...

With a focus on the art and culture of jazz, the two-month "Jam Session in Las Cruces," event has treated the community to multimedia exhibits, concerts, films and public gallery talks and will continue its run through Feb. 3. The first project of its kind, "Jam Session in Las Cruces" was brought to life by New Mexico State University music professor James Shearer. read more...

    Two New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service specialists shared their knowledge about good agricultural and manufacturing practices recently with agricultural students in the Dominican Republic.

    Nancy Flores, Extension food safety specialist, and Del Jimenez, agriculture specialist, participated in the Partners of the Americas' Farmer to Farmer program, which is supported by the United States foreign assistance program's Agency for International Development.

    Farmer to Farmer brings together agricultural professionals and practitioners from the U.S. and the Caribbean. Volunteers from the United States work with farmers and agribusiness owners in the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti and Nicaragua to identify local needs from which projects are designed to address those needs." read more...

    New Mexico State University's Office of Student Diversity and Outreach was busy in December, as a host of graduates were honored with diversity stoles and faculty and staff were recognized for their contributions to campus diversity. The American Indian Program recognized nine students who graduated from NMSU in December. read more...
