3. URC Research Fair and AMP Program – Karen Luces

Karen Luces spoke to members and provided a tentative schedule for the upcoming Alliance for Minority Participation (AMP) Fair which is held in conjunction with the URC Research Fair. The Fair will be held at Corbett Center on October 7, 2005. The call for posters memorandum, which provided the registration link and deadline of September 30, 2005, was distributed at the meeting. The call for posters was also distributed to campus via ABCD-Distribution. Members voted to attend the URC Fair in lieu of a formal meeting.

4. URC Committees

Past Chair Rudi Schoenmackers set up a number of new committees last year that will be continued this year. Marc Pruyn asked that every member volunteer for at least one of the committees for Research Infrastructure, Incentives & Disincentives, Awards, Promotion and Tenure, and Elections. It was suggested that the URC should have a member on the Faculty Senate for representation as they have been working on faculty incentives. Dr. Pruyn asked committee members to meet and have a report for the November meeting. He also suggested that the committees might meet right after the regular meeting if time permits.

5. On-Going Guests and Research Cluster Presentations

Marc Pruyn told members that he wanted to have a Research Cluster presentation for each of the future meetings so that URC could have the opportunity to have a better understanding of their directions and possible collaboration. Library’s Dean Titus offered to provide a presentation on the library’s status and also the impact on institutions due to lack of funding at a future meeting. Dean Lacey of the Graduate School requested that the Cluster Graduate Assistants have an opportunity to present their accomplishments and goals towards the end of the Spring Semester.

6. Faculty Senate Representative

The URC needs to fill the Ex Officio position for Faculty Senate Representative. It was suggested that Dr. Pruyn contact Larry Creider, Chair of Faculty Senate, to have this position filled.

7. Other Business

V.P. Research Search - Marc Pruyn as URC Chair has been appointed to the search committee for the Vice Provost for Research. Dr. Pruyn told members that the position would be changed to a Vice President position, and that he would provide information as is appropriate. When the search has been narrowed down to on-campus interviews, he will keep the URC updated on interview schedules.

Research Graduate Assistantships – Dean Lacey was asked to provide a brief update on the graduate assistantships. She reported that originally 20 positions had been anticipated but had been reduced to 16 due to funding concerns. She said the orientation for faculty and student advisors will be on September 9th at 7:00 – 9:00 in a breakfast meeting followed by round-table discussions. She said that next year there would be funding for an additional 16 positions.

The meeting adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
