URC Minutes - March 29, 1996

1. Approval of Minutes

Minutes of the February 26, 1996 meeting were approved.

2. Overview of University Research Efforts

David Myers, Associate Dean, University Library, gave an overview of the current services offered by the library.

Highlights included:

1. A networked campus CD-ROM program is now in place. Twelve databases on CD-ROM are now accessible.

2. Document delivery services are available through “Pegasus”. Library materials are delivered to your office. This service is being supported by the last General Issue bonds. Faculty and staff are encouraged to use this service.

Attendees were reminded that each department has a library liaison with whom they are encouraged to communicate.

An effort to develop a strategic 5 year plan is in process. A major cut in the serial budget is being anticipated. (Current budget is 65% periodicals, 35% books.) If possible, a summary of the plan will be distributed to URC members for comment.

3. Subcommittee Reports

  • Sounding Board for Financial Policies
    No report at this time.

  • Principle Investigators Manual
    No report at this time.

  • Unproductive and Duplicate Efforts Among University Departments in Seeking Research Funding.
    Currently being reviewed and will be distributed after revisions.

  • 4. Nomination and Elections for 1996-1997 URC.

    Chair Elect: Greg Butler, Government
    Faculty Representative: Nirmala Khandan, Civil, Ag, & Geological Engr.
    Position Appointment: Roy Rodriguez, College of Education

    Each nominee introduced themselves and briefly discussed qualifications and interest in the office. Nominations were invited from the floor. There were no additional nominations.

    Motion: Harold Matteson moved that nominations be accepted. Second: Tim Pettibone.

    Vote: All ayes; no nays; no abstentions.

    The chair reminded committee members that his term ends June 30, 1996. Dr. Kathy Brook will assume the chair responsibilities for 1996-97.

    5. Announcements

    Nellie Aragon announced that on May 1, 1996, there will be a presentation regarding “The Community of Science.” A handout explaining The Community of Science was distributed and will be sent to all faculty.

    The Community of Science is a global registry allowing access to accurate, timely information on current research endeavors, thus facilitating collaboration between researchers. The Community of Science facilitates this effort via the World Wide Web which presents a brief narrative regarding scientists, research projects and expertise. NMSU is participating in this effort at an annual cost of $4,000/year. NMSU faculty involved in research are encouraged to participate by providing information to the database.

    6. Next URC meeting is scheduled for April 26, 1996, 3:30 p.m., Library Associates Room.

    7. Meeting adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
