3. CORC Update

Internet 2 - NMSU will be a full participating member with all colleges contributing their share.

Community of Science Database - Dr. Butler encouraged all members of the committee to use the COS web page, stating that it could be accessed through the College of Arts & Sciences web page. He noted it is a good way to stay abreast of funding alerts and advised that Nellie Quezada-Aragon is NMSU's liason at this time.

Electronic Routing and Approval Systems (EARS) - CORC is currently discussing this program which involves an advanced electronic routing of paperwork.

Legislative Initiatives - Dr. Butler explained that Pat Quintana is gathering names of university people who are experts in water policy and water management. Being able to provide legislators with names of people with expertise in water matters will help make NMSU's presence more strongly felt in Santa Fe.

SMARTS Internet Information Service - Dr. Butler explained that this is another internet service which provides information on funding opportunities and is easy to sign up with. He said that while it is generally acknowledged that the COS database gives faculty a bit more control, SMARTS can provide one more path for information.

4. Evaluation & Looking Ahead to 1998/1999

Dr. Butler stated that considerable time had gone into restructuring the University Research Council this year; working on Strategic Planning, and developing contact with the Legislative Liason dept. He said a primary responsibility of the council was to provide overviews of university research efforts. Next year the council will be involved in questions regarding funding for various databases, procedures with grants and contracts, and ongoing support for the library. Dr. Butler noted that CORC also favors library improvements. It's expected there will be much opportunity to connect and work with the the university legislative liason (Pat Quintana) as well as continued support, guidance and direction for CORC.

5. Other Business/Annoncements

Marilyn Pase announced that a meeting had been held to discuss NMSU Research Ethics Policies on Tuesday, April 14. The group consisted of Gary Cunningham, Jim Botsford, Laura Huenneke, Gabe Garcia and herself. Marilyn stated that material on the subject matter was distributed and follow-on meetings are planned.

In response to a question regarding the university's Administration Policies and Procedures, Dr. Butler advised that it can be accessed on the web and that a hard copy will be sent to each Dean's office.

Dr. Cowie expressed some thoughts and concerns with regard to the Internet 2 program and the vBNS (very high-speed backbone network service) connection at NMSU.

Tim Pettibone reminded the group of the Research Symposium being held all that day (Fri., Apr. 24). He said a Reception would be held on the patio with awards being presented to the students and everyone was welcome to attend.

6. Adjourn

It was noted that this was the final meeting for the University Research Council for this semester; that Dr. Butler would be on sabbatical, and Dr. Cowie would assume the position of Chair.

Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Kelly
