Sexual Assault

What options are available for female students if ever in a negative situation be it sexual/alcohol related?

For any individual in a situation they believe to be unsafe, the first step would be to remove themselves (i.e. leave). Students should contact a friend or other trusted person, or contact Crimson Cab 524-TAXI for a ride to a safe location (free with NMSU ID).

Before going out, here are some tips to consider:

• go with a large group of friends

• do not leave with a person you have just met

• trust your instincts- if you feel uncomfortable around someone, there may be a good reason

• identify a sober designated driver for the night

• don’t let your drink out of your sight

If you feel like you have a problem with alcohol abuse, here is a list of contacts that may be able to help:

• Alcoholics Anonymous Las Cruces- 575-527-1803

• NMSU Counseling Center- 575-646-2731

• Wellness, Alcohol and Violence Education (WAVE) Program- 575-646-2813

If you have been sexually or physically assaulted, here is a list of contacts that may be able to help:

• La Pinon Sexual Assault Recovery Services of Southern New Mexico- 575- 526-3437

• La Casa Domestic Violence Shelter-575- 526-2819

• Crisis Assistance Listening Line- 575-646-CALL (2255)

• As always, in the case of an emergency, call 911!

How many females are sexually assaulted each year?

683,280 women are sexually assaulted each year in the United States alone.

How many girls don't report sexual assault every year?

This is a great question; unfortunately the answer is not equally as great.

The reason this is hard to answer is because it is nearly impossible to research an act that was never reported in the first place.   What agency can investigate entirely unknown (unreported) data? However, we can play a game of averages to gain a very rough idea:

Studies by the SAA and other agencies indicate that roughly 680,000 sexual assaults occur annually.

Other studies indicate that only about 2% of sexual assault cases are reported.

Given these numbers; 13,600 cases are reported each year.   That means around 666,000 cases go unreported each year.   That is 1,825 unreported instances every single day.

Whether a victim has reported the case or not, they can still seek help from any number of agencies.   National victim assistance programs are available from places like sexualassaultawareness.com or locally with La Piñon, WAVE, and the NMSU Counseling Center.

When does rape usually occur?

There is no one profile for when assaults occur.

What is interpersonal violence?

Emotional, verbal, and/or physically damaging conflict between any two (or more) people regardless of the existing relationship between the two or more parties involved.

How many Aggies experience sexual assault, rape, or other forms of interpersonal violence each year?

It is impossible to exact how many Aggies are victims of sexual assault due to the low rate of criminal reporting and the difficulty in obtaining statistical data pertaining to community level sexual assaults.

However, studies show that on a national level 1 in 4 college women will be victims of sexual assault during their time as a student.   The first six weeks are an especially dangerous time for incoming freshmen.
