Dating

-Dating Do's
            -Do try to look your best and be punctual on dates
            -Do flatter and compliment your date on the way they look and the things they wear
            -Be interested and interesting
            -Do tell someone if you are not interested in dating them again
            -Do date the type of people you like and are attracted to
            -Do stay positive even when dates don't end well
            -Do make dating happen for yourself
            -Do surround yourself with positive like minded people who are also dating
             -Do pay attention to early “Red Flags” such as jealousy, possessiveness, trying  to talk you      into doing things that you are uncomfortable with, especially sexually, becoming violent or threatening violence, and keeping you away from friends and family.

-Dating Dont's
            -Never tell lies to your date or pretend anything about your life that isn't true
            -Don't give away too much about yourself at the start
            -Don't ignore your personal safety when dating
            -Don't give out personal information
            -Concentrate solely on your date when you are with them
            -Courtesy and manners will get you everywhere

Friendship

-Tips on being a good friend
            -treat your friends the way they want to be treated
            -be trustworthy
            -be honest
            -make and keep plans to the best of your ability
            -be outgoing
            -be a shoulder to lean on
            -keep promises and secrets
            -be a good listener
          

Friends in distress: What you can do to help

  • The best way to help a friend or other loved one in distress is to know available resources and be a compassionate listening ear.
  • Crisis Assistance Listening Line (575) 646-2255
  • NMSU Counseling Center  If a friend has been struggling with stress, a bad breakup, alcohol, drugs, family problems, depression, suicidal thoughts, or any other curveball that life has dished out, recommend the NMSU Counseling Center. With 30 free sessions for full-time NMSU students, recommend that your friend take advantage of this great service. It's non-judgmental, confidential, and free.
  • La Pinon and WAVE Violence Page  A woman has a 1 in 4 chance of being a victim of sexual assault while she is in college, usually by someone she knew. La Pinon offers a 24-hour advocacy line for those who have been victims of sexual assault.           

 

The Party Scene

According to AlcoholStats.com the percentage of college freshman who drink beer frequently or occasionally was 15% lower in 2007 than in 2000.

In 2007 the American Freshman Survey found that only 21% of freshman college students spent 6 hours or more on “partying” in a typical week. This is down 43% from 1987

According to AlcoholStats.com in 2007 the total fatalities in drunk driving crashes reached 12,998.

Each year NMSU participates in an alcohol survey.  The following are the results of last year’s survey:

  • The majority of NMSU students never drink and drive
  • 80% of NMSU students would prefer that illegal drugs not be available at parties
  • 69% of incoming freshmen report drinking prior to attending NMSU
  • One- third of NMSU students report drinking rarely or never
