New Mexico State University

For Prospective Students

Thank you for your interest in the Women's Studies Program at New Mexico State University. Our program has been active since 1989 and is located in the College of Arts and Sciences. Over the past few years our program has grown academically. In 2005 we added an undergraduate major and a graduate minor, extending an already diverse curriculum for all students.

Our Program is committed to excellence in the classroom, and values outreach to the community through service-learning and the application of feminist theory through practice. We offer an extensive multidisciplinary curricula for anyone who is seeking to learn more about women's issues and feminisms in U.S. society and around the world.

The benefits of a Women's Studies degree include strong critical thinking and analytical skills developed in a student-centered environment. Our students are encouraged to apply what they learn in the classroom to the world through practica and service-learning in our community. Graduates of Women's Studies find successful careers in a range of fields including the arts, business, criminal justice, education, health care, media, politics and law, social work, psychology, and sports.

The NMSU Women's Studies Program is an academic program whose mission is to provide a rigorous and rewarding major and minor, to encourage and support quality scholarship by and about women, to sponsor university-based events relevant to women, to develop community partnerships and promote service learning, and to work with other academic units at NMSU to serve students. Underlying these endeavors is a fundamental commitment to equality, diversity, and social justice.
