The chancellor is the chief executive officer of the university system and is charged with responsibility for providing strategic direction and general supervision over all affairs of the university. The chancellor is elected by the Board of Regents.
NMSU is served by a vice chancellor and provost. The vice chancellor serves as the chief operating officer and assumes chancellor responsibilities when the chancellor is absent or incapacitated. The provost is the chancellor's chief academic officer. Under the chancellor, and for their respective units, the provost oversees all academic programs and provide general administrative supervision of all academic units of the university.
Various vice presidents and others who report directly to the chancellor are responsible for day-to-day administration of particular units.
