The Doctor of Philosophy in Wildlife and Fisheries Ecology at New Mexico State University prepares students to become leaders in ecological research, conservation science, and natural resource management. Through advanced coursework and independent research, doctoral students develop the scientific expertise needed to address complex challenges affecting wildlife populations, fisheries resources, habitats, and ecosystems in an increasingly dynamic world.

We’re removing barriers to graduate education, which is why we don’t require the GRE.
The Ph.D. degree can be earned in about 48 credits of formal course work beyond the master's degree, plus 18 additional dissertation research credits, for a minimum total of 66 credits beyond the BS degree, as detailed below. Candidates are accepted into the department to work with a specific faculty member that serves as their major advisor and committee chair.

GPA: A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for admission.
Prerequisites: A bachelor's or master's degree in wildlife ecology, fisheries science, biology, ecology, natural resources, environmental science, or a closely related field
Application: The application includes transcripts, three letters of recommendation, evidence of capacity for research (e.g. master’s thesis, a professional paper, peer reviewed manuscripts), a letter of intent or statement of purpose that addresses individual professional and personal goals related, and a CV/resume.
