Our Department of Geological Sciences pairs this exceptional location with cutting-edge research facilities and hands-on training. Students have access to state-of-the-art laboratories in mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, stratigraphy, geochronology, paleomagnetism, and sedimentology, as well as advanced tools like Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) and Laser-Ablation Multi-Collector ICP-MS. With a dedicated fleet of field vehicles, a fully equipped rock preparation lab, and robust GIS and computing resources, we empower graduate students to conduct meaningful research that bridges theory with practical application. Scholarships Available

Get up to 100% of tuition covered with the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship.*

Complete a minimum of 30 graduate credits, including a minimum of 6 credits for thesis. At least 15 credits must be earned in courses numbered 500 or above, and at least 15 credits must be earned in geology. Students are expected to participate in the department’s colloquium each semester.

To apply for the Master of Science in Geology at NMSU, you need a bachelor's degree in geology or a related field, a minimum 3.0 GPA, and a completed application with transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.  

The application deadline is February 15 for the fall semester.
